I have had hydrangeas for some years, but for the last two years I have maybe had only one or two flowers. Normally I would not prune the deadheads until Spring, but my husband pruned them after flowering. Is there anything I can do to get back the flowers?

Garden experts usually recommend leaving the old heads on over winter to provide some extra protection against frost, I noticed this morning, on my walk with the dog, that the only place free of frost was in the woods under the canopy of bare oak branches, I guess that's a similar sort of thing.

Maybe some netting or fleece over the top will do the trick

Mine and my neighbours only had very limited flowers last year, val - I don't know anyone who had a good flowering last year. I don't prune mine until Easter but they grow like mad after that, usually. All you can do is see what happens this year, and encourage them with some hydrangea food granules scattered round the plants.
I did that once, took 3 years to recover, now I wait till the buds have developed, then prune it, Just give it time, mine is massive, pink, lilac and blue all in one head. I live On the coast of north east Scotland, strong winds, have just left it, no fleece nothing.
