Does anyone agree with me that councils in the UK should build large quantities of Prefab Bungalows to ease the shortage of affordable Social Housing. I have very fond memories of these so called temporary buildings which were designed to last for 10 years, I know that some lasted much longer than that & were very comfortable to live in.

Council house (section Temporary prefabs(1941-195 Wikepedia )
housing stock. The immediate post-war period saw the building of prefab bungalows with a design life of ten years. Innovative steel-framed properties.

Yes a perfect answer to the housing shortage . There are still a few around even now.
I can remember Prefabs too.....lots of people loved them.
I do not think this government particularly wants to help people who need housing.
Sort of going backwards, ron. Mightn't a better method be to stop importing 650,000 prospective tenants every year.
It is more a question of finding the land to build on, surely?

I remember holidays in Norfolk staying in prefab bungalows.

Something like this would be a good idea.

I think it is high time ''call me Dave'' got his finger out & did something to help his own people out instead of trying to right all the ills of the world.
It is totally commonsense. Moreover, enable the plots to be built from 'flatpacks' by potential residents keen enough to do so. Give them a subsidy or charge them less rent for so doing.
The cost of homes to people on ordinary or no wages is a scandal.
Called Modular Homes now

There is one being built in the next street ,took 3 weeks from ground clearance to finish.
But as said the problem is the lack of land not building time.
^^ That one is built on what was 1/2 the garden of the house next door.
I think it would be an ideal solution but unfortunately some of those destined to live I them and the right on liberal left will complain they are being segregated and denigrated by being in a non standard house that every other hard working person has.

Why should they get a prefab when other people get 'proper' houses?
^^ This is like the one near me, once they are finished you can't tell them from a conventionally built house.

I Do Not Appreciate folk posting to suggest that there is a lack of land to erect Pre-Fabs. There are a few fields behind my cottage residence which are used for grazing horses and could accommodate at least a hundred or more such properties without causing any distress to me.

Snag is that it would interfere with the saddle folk who are often townies who have more money than true country folk.

Hans.
Surely a prefab is better than being homeless or living in a substandard dangerous house or bring in a hostel or bed and breakfast?
There are many derelict areas in towns (mine included) and cities.
Stop developers buying sites and then not building.
We are being inundated with high cost developments and not building for people working in the area.

Is it also Green Belt Hans?
@Baldric.......Yes: Unfortunately perhaps to those in need.

Hans.
One can not just continue to sprawl everywhere. We, and other species, need rough ground and countryside and wild places. We for peace of mind, other species for habitats. For sure the short term relief is to build more residential properties but one needs to solve the real problem not simply put off yet again the fateful day when it has to be done. Whether it is prefabs or flats or whatever I don't believe is a big issue. Working out where to put them, is. But the bigger issue is to reduce the population; not go out of our way to grow it whilst using more building as a 'sticking plaster' fix.
Perhaps there would be merit in Free Contraceptives and a more positive control of Immigrants.

Hans.
There is plenty of space in this country. It is scandalous that people are sleeping on the streets.
My partner grew up in a prefab. It was a decent home, he tells me.
We should do whatever we can to get people off the streets.
