I have heard that coffee grounds were good to use around Hostas to keep the slugs away, however I don't drink coffee. Does anyone know if tea leaves work?

No, they enjoy a nice tea. Ask in a cafe for some coffee grounds, they will be happy to give you some to try, as long as it`s not instant coffee.
Best thing to keep slugs away is beer
Very true ELVIS68, but what a waste. If you use that idea, bury half a jam jar, leaving 2inches above the soil level, and add half a jar of `Real Ale` and the slugs will drown happy. Don`t forget to empty it regularly.
crushed egg shells is another one - they find it hard like glass shards
Coffe grounds do work. They seem to 'snow-plough' into them and get stuck.

The best thing is to buy some Nemaslug. They are microscopic nematodes in powder form, which you mix with water and water onto the garden.
They get into the soil, and inside the slugs and kill them. The reason they are better than surface treatments, is that they kill all the slugs, on the surface and in the ground.

It is harmless to pets, children and other wild life, and will last several months.
