Does anyone have any experience of setting up above. I like the idea of disposing of kitchen refuse in one, but setup cost for initial batch of worms (Tiger worms and Dendrobaena) seems expensive. I can build their home.

are there any local "green" facebook pages or forums for your area? You might find someone on there who could give you some start up worms

Go to fishing shop, ask for brandling worms..... few pence.

ferlew - seems you need several hundred for initial setup, I know from experience that you only may get a dozen or so in a tub from tackle shop.

Another idea is for me to locate local riding stables and have a rummage in their dung heap

The last time you could buy worms for a ''few pence '' was possibly in the 50's ... or after the war.
The last time I bought worms ( in the UK) they were £28.50 a kilo.
If you seriously think you can start composting with a few worms forget it.
Make them a house, there is loads of info online regarding building them a home.
Research .. breeding worms .. before you think of composting with worms.
This is the only way you will create enough worms to start with if funds are low.
If you try composting with a few worms, you will just end up with a smelly mess as you will end up overfeeding them.

I paid ~£50 for wormery, worms and stand including delivery.

I don't consider that overly expensive.

I got mine from Wiggly Wigglers. Can't remember how much I paid, long time ago.
