Mesculun and spinach both do well in partial shade... but still need maybe 2-3 hours sunlight per day. Almost any plant that would grow in shady areas is going to be of the salad types...
damp shade or dry shade? acid limey or neutral soil?
If I could add to this, I'd also like to know what plants do well in a shady and rather dry area (neutral soil) so far, I've only got lemon balm growing there.
Thanks.

It's dry and shady but I don't know if it's acid or neutral
Periwinkle grows really well but it's not edible :-(

Wild garlic grows well in the shade & you can eat the leaves.
Does it have to be edible? If not, I'd suggest ferns, or bamboo to hide said fence
