Advice sought on laying a lawn from seed

What is the best approach? How thick does the new top soil need to be? What would be a good blend of grass seed? (have got a cat - although quite old and not too destructive). Any tips of how best to tend it once laid? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Well, to be honest I already know how to use Google and I have used it on this very topic. I just hoped that someone might be able to give me some most valuable advice based on their own experience of this task.
