Really Big Onions

Purely for a novelty I planted 4 seeds last year of those really large onions that you see at vegetable shows (weigh about 4lbs ?) and they all grew, I transplanted one into large flower bucket (2 still look like spring onions, and I managed to ruin the last one). What I need to know please, is , now that the main one has grown enormously should the actual onion be on top of the soil like when they grow in the garden ?as at the moment I cannot see the actual onion and wondered if I should clear the soil away down to the onion. Any help would be appreciated.

The programme I saw showed it above the soil and to encourage further growth the prize winning gardener used to peel the outer 'dead' or brown layer away.

Oh, thank-you, I wondered , but it seems sacrilage to peel anything off! Just shows you what an amateur I am.
