I saw a cheap iron yesterday and I thought about buying it. It had a ceramic plate. Is there any benefit from having a ceramic plate? Are they better or worse than the Teflon type plates?

Teflon softens with heat, and is then easily scratched. Once scratched, it will no longer iron smoothly. Choose between ceramic and stainless steel. Ceramic should be the easiest to keep clean, but don't drop it, or you'll have to buy another!!

Thanks heathfield. I have since looked at review sites and they say what you say. I`ve got a stainless steel iron and it`s ok so I think I`ll save my money and just stick wth it. I think the inside is furred up from limescale so I`ll get a limescale remover.
I do a lot of needlework so a good iron is important... I always have stainless steel
