the first (AD). Julius Caesar was in Britain in the first century BC but actual conquest was much later.
The Romans didn't conquer Britain, hence the need for Hadrian's Wall.

fair point TCL but the place they conquered, they called Britannia. It was not the same as modern Britain, of course. So the Scots came later to civilisation than the English, preferring to wait until a few of the bugs had been ironed out.
