Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55bc. So this was before Christ's birth.

The answer is both. I
n 55 BC he only got as far as the beach at Deal, so I count that as a failed invasion.
He returned in 54BC Julius Caesar crossed the Channel with a force of around 27,000 infantry and cavalry. They landed again at Deal and were unopposed - the Britons had retreated to higher ground. The Romans marched inland and met a large force of Britons led by Cassivellaunus north of the River Thames. After a hard battle the Romans defeated the Britons and some tribal leaders surrendered to the Romans. In September Caesar was forced to return to Gaul (France) to deal with problems there and the Romans left Britain.
They reinvaded in 43AD and this was successful and sustained
While the Romand did invade in 55BC they got beaten back by the local tribes and did not stay.

They also invaded a year later, in 54BC, and while they did better they did not stay, they had to go a fight in France (Gaul).

The then invaded in 43AD, and this time they stayed.
So all these answers are the same as mine.

Before Christ.

Sorry factor 30, your append was not there when I started my append.

Did some searching to be sure of my facts, and by the time I pressed Submit your append had been added.
>So all these answers are the same as mine.

Depends WHY the poster is asking.

If they are asking when they VERY FIRST invaded then indeed it was 55BC.

But maybe the question is asking when they first invaded AND started their long occupation (it is not clear from the question).

It is worth adding the clarification so the poster can decide which answer to give (if it is homework for example).

Mind you a quick search on Google would have found the answer in minutes.
It sounds like homework to me.
Why else would anyone want to know?

Your answer was so much more succinct than mine, VHG.

Yes lexie our answers support yours. I just wanted to give Barney's pal all the facts so he can decide which answer to give. The first two were regarded by some as failed invasions. This educational website refers to the 43 AD one as the first SUCCESSFUL invasion http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/Homewo rk/Romans.html

The reason I asked my friend in Madagascar was asking if we have an independence day cos theirs is coming up. I was going to say we don't have one because nobody's invaded us recently,(I know you are all going to say that's debateable) then I remembered the Romans! Just didn't know the date. (We only did britain since 1700 in my history lessons at school!) thanks for all your answers guys!
I think you will find that we were successfully invaded in 1066.
...by the Romans? Wouldn't they be a bit past it by then?
"I was going to say we don't have one because nobody's invaded us recently"

The French led by William the Conqueror invaded in 1066 not the Romans. Doesn't anyone go to school any more?

Did we ever get made independant after the french invaded,if so we must have an independance day!! Or is the whole episode too embarassing to remember annually?
Invaded in 1066 ! I can't remember that!
No, the French invaded and became King William I.
William of Orange invaded England in 1688, bringing 15,000 men with him.

James the 1st was on the throne at the time so it was a definate invasion from an outside "army".

To be fair, he had been invited to invade by those that did not like James, and was told he would not be opposed.

James then fled England and Willam and his wife Mary became joint rulers as William and Mary.
Sorry VHG I'm going to be annoyingly pedantic here and I do apologise in advance - It was actually James 2nd who was on the throne when William III and Mary II invaded in 1688. Not James 1st. James 1st came to the thrown in 1603 after the death of Elizabeth 1st.
Yes and James the First was an invasion - from Scotland!
( Where he was James VI )
