Why would he want to sack him – even if he could? David Cameron is absolutely right to say it should be harder for immigrants to claim benefits – and John Major is absolutely right to say that not all immigrants come here to take advantage of our benefits system. What's the problem?

No problem naomi...just putting this out as a debating issue. What a pity more of his Party don't think the same.
Do they not?
/// Sir John said: "There was a different social value placed on immigration. I saw immigration at very close quarters in the 1950s. ///

/// "They shared my house. They were my neighbours. I played with them as boys. I didn't see people who had come here just to benefit from our social system. I saw people with guts and the drive to travel halfway across the world in many cases to better themselves and their families. ///

I amongst others are constantly told to stop harping on back to the 50s, and that the world has now changed so get used to it.

Regarding Immigration to this country I do agree, the world has certainly changed.

Perhaps if more out little white boys played with more of our little immigrant boys, a generation might grow up that had more understanding of sensitive issues like race and colour. I too grew up in the 1950's AOG and lived in North London. I had school and church friends who were not white. Perhaps that is one of the reasons that I am so anti-racist now in my 60's.

We seem to have learned so little. Some of my white neighbours still insist that that there is nothing wrong with saying things like " I am just going down the P*k1es for a pint of milk" This is especially galling as the shop in question was bought 35 years ago by Hindu people, who originated from East Africa ! (I hope I haven't disguised the P word too much).

Can I add that a generation before mine, the area of North London where I was born was a refuge for Jews who had escaped from the Nazis. I wonder if people fleeing the pogroms and Nazi atrocities would be made so welcome these days ?
The only person I know who uses the term you mention, mikey, is a friend of Indian heritage.
I saw an Only fools and horses a couple of years ago where Uncle Albert said "I am going down the pa*i shop"

However if you see it now it is bleeped out.
Only days after Warsi warned that the Tories needed to be nicer to immigrants if they are to win the next election, we get that nice Mr Major saying how wonderful immigrants are.

Electioneering has started early.
Praise of some decent folk, economic migrants, trying to better themselves is all very well but isn't going to solve the problem of this country being too full already, and the correct action is to say, "Thank you but try elsewhere", not encourage them here. My view is the that Conservative instinct is not just to better oneself, but to do so at the expense of the rest of the community. If others can not or will not do the same but do so 'better', then that's their fault, tough. After all Capitalism is basically about trying to attract as much of society's wealth to yourself so you have it and others do not, no matter what legal way you find to do it.

FF...with the greatest of respect, you need to get out more ! The term is still widely used, especially by the ill-educated. I come across it almost every day, sometimes, I am ashamed to say, in my own family. When I have gently pointed out that the word is just not appropriate anymore, I am usually greeted by complete incomprehension.

I honestly believe that these people are not racists in the manner of the BNP. Its just that they don't understand that the word is now a term of abuse, much in the same way as "blackie", which I heard used in a business meeting a few months ago. The Chair of the Meeting, to her credit, demanded that the word was immediately taken back and it was but the colleague that used it was genuinely puzzled as "everybody uses this word where I came from " which was Plymouth apparently. We still have a long way to go it seems.
I'm not sure of your point here Mickey.

Major seems to be pointing out immigrants integrated and wished to work and that now immigration has changed.

It has, many do not wish to be British, instead choosing to create sub cultures, some even wanting their own laws. There are also far too many who dont come here to work but to sit on our too ample benefits system (yes some British do too, but that is not relevant to this debate).

Most Tories want controlled immigration not uncontrolled. I ask you, just what exactly is wrong with that? Why do you want to import the worlds scum, surely we have enough of our own?
// the problem of this country being too full already //

This country is not full. There is plenty of room.

I agree gromit. Actually I quite liked Major, and still do. He's basically a nice chap who was promoted way above his abilities. He would have made a smashing Scout Leader, and if he lived next door, he would have lent you all those Black and Decker attachments that you never got around to buying.

He would have made a pretty good sports coach for young people, and an excellent School Governor. But as a PM he was hopeless....far too weak and ineffectual, who knew that he only a temporary stand in, while the Labour Party got its election machine up to full power. The only reason that he got the job was that he wasn't Heseltine.
Yeah plenty of room. That's why we're out of housing and persecuting any who own unused houses, and paying fortunes to put folk into B&B, and runing out of other facilities and money for services, and our houses are the smallest in Europe and getting smaller and there's urban sprawl etc. etc. etc.. Plenty of room.

/// Perhaps if more out little white boys played with more of our little immigrant boys, a generation might grow up that had more understanding of sensitive issues like race and colour. ///

Why have you introduced colour into the debate, I have news for you all little immigrant boys (as you described them) are not of a darker skin colour.

/// We seem to have learned so little. Some of my white neighbours still insist that that there is nothing wrong with saying things like " I am just going down the P*k1es for a pint of milk" This is especially galling as the shop in question was bought 35 years ago by Hindu people, who originated from East Africa ! Since they happen to be Hindus, then no offence there then, that is of course if the Hindu people from East Africa, take offence at being equalled to people from Pakistan?

Your attitude is equally racist, since you seem to constantly criticise white people.
Like all debates, there are two sides to it.

Yes there are many immigrants who work hard and better themselves.

Many of the Asian community become doctors, lawyers, solicitors etc., other Asians open shops or start a business. Immigrants from other countries also work hard and start businesses.

This contrasts with many "white" British people who sit in the pub and moan that nobody will give them a job.

However for every immigrant that works hard and contributes to society there are others who don't.

The country is full of criminal gangs from all the ethnic groups, black, Chinese, Asian, Somali, Romanian and so on. In fact a search in Google will show how widespread these criminal gangs are.

Also many immigrants flout our laws and rules.

I live on the edge of Birmingham and in certain areas (mostly Asian) about 30% of cars are uninsured. Yes the police are scared to target these areas for fear of being branded racist.

Many of these Asian areas are a disgrace, with rubbish dumped everywhere. If a person does not want a 3 piece suite or a mattress they just dump them at the side of the road.

I find driving though these areas so upsetting I often drive miles out my way to avoid them.

I had a man from the Gas Board in my house the other day and he said there are immigrant areas of Birmingham where they will only go out in pairs, not on there own.

He has even been stopped in his car in some immigrant areas and asked why a "white person" is coming in to this area.

I think unless you live near some of these immigrant areas you have no idea how bad they are and how awful they become. Some suburbs in Birmingham, that were fairly decent 20 years ago, are now 100% Asian and totally ruined.

School are 100% Asian children and I am sure most of you have heard of the Trojan Horse attempts in Birmingham to get strict Muslim teachings in these schools.

I am not totally anti immigrant, Tescos and Marks and Spencer were started by immigrants, Isambard Kingdom Brunel was an immigrant, as are many people who shaped this country.

However it has gone too far and we are now in real danger of losing our identity. We also have so many immigrant ghettos in our cities that it is very easy for illegal immigrants to hide in these ghettos.

Immigration is like putting sugar in your tea. One or two spoon fulls of sugar in your tea is fine, 50 spoon fulls is too much, and we now have 50 spoon fulls of immigrants, and we cant do much about it.

AOG...with respect ...drivel. You know perfectly well what point I was making here. If our native British boys, and girls, mixed with more children of ethnic communities, as you and I did, then we would all have a better understanding of racial problems. Some of our recent immigrants may be wary of mixing with us, so couldn't we make an effort as well ?

There...no mention of white people this time...are you satisfied now ?
