"Those who are ignorant of history are condemned to repeat it".
"History repeats itself: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce".

But then again "History was written by the victors". And "Treason never does succeed, for if it does none dare call it treason".
Judging by the way some politicians behave, - nothing!

One can't teach human kind anything. They're as thick as my mother in law's custard.

Writing history is one thing, getting people to read it is another.
If Hitler had read about Napoleon's attempt to invade Russia, he might well have left Russia alone and won the second world war, as his troops would not heve been so stretched.
If Napoleon had read about the even earlier attempt by King Christian of Sweden to invade Russia, he might not have invaded, and he might not have lost the battle of Waterloo, as his troops had been so devastated by the Russian winter.
(One piece of useless information - the Russian winter was so cold that Napoleon's troops' trouser buttons froze to bits, so they had to fight with one hand holding up their trousers. )
History doesn't repeat itself - only men do.
The rich get richer and men have an inherent trait to fight wars and kill other men.
Every time the government tell us that lessons have been learned from war the same things seem to happen again.
That a lot of them have short memories
"That a lot of them have short memories."

At my school we learned about Kings and Queens and important Churchmen. Nothing about the lives of the common folk.
