HINCKLEY FAMILY
My husband's mother's maiden name was Hinckley & I am currently researching that side of our family.
My late mother-in-law's father, Richard Russell Hinckley, was born on 16th May, 1879, six months after his father's death. His father was Reginald Harvey Hinckley, aged 39 at time of death.
Reginald Harvey Hinckley, giving his name as Reginald Hinckley O'Leary, was married to Fanny Russell on 18th September, 1866. Reginald's occupation is given as formerly a Lieutenant in the Indian Army on the marriage certificate. Strangely, his occupation is listed as Sheriffs Officers Assistant on his death certificate and as Royal Society for Preventing Cruelty to Animals Inspector on his son's birth certificate six months later. Very odd!
I have found the family listed as living at 1 Block, Peabody Buildings, Lambeth on the 1881 census. Fanny is listed as a widow aged 40. Four children are also listed - Reginald (b 1867) aged 14: Walter (b1873) aged 8: Alice (born 1874) aged 7: Russell (born 1880) aged 1. The last entry refers to my husband's grandfather, Richard Russell HInckley who was born in 1879 & not 1880. Two little boys, Harry Herbert & Harry Percy had died in 1874 & 1880 aged 2 & 4.
After much searching, I cannot find a record of the births of either Reginald snr or Reginald jnr. There was always some talk within the family that the elder Reginald might have been born in Ireland but I can find no evidence to back that up. There was also talk that he might have been connected with the Fitzgibbon Henchey family in Ireland but perhaps that was wishful thinking!
If there are any Hinckleys out there who may be able to give me information on the birth details of the two Reginalds, father & son, I'd be most grateful. The younger Reginald did, I know for certain, emigrate to South Africa.
Thank you very much for reading this.
