Who lived there.

Is it possible to find out who lived at a property in the 1920's?
The property in question is a shop that I believe was a fish and chip shop in the 20's and is still there but is now a Chinese take away and fish and chip shop.
Wondered if I could get that sort of information online or perhaps from the Council.

You might in 10 years time as the census form would be available at long last.

But apart from that, it may be difficult. Not sure what to suggest.
What town is it in? A lot of places have local history societies that might be able to help.

Thanks for your answers.
Kiki-frog I looked to see if the town has a local history society and found an email address for their local heritage library so sent an email.
Will keep fingers crossed that they reply.
you will be able to look at town or borough directories for the decade that will give you lists of businesses and some domestic addresses, these were published by local newspapers mainly but sometimes by a local authority, they will be bound and available in the local reference library, to perhaps find info on what is avialble check out the relevant town on the GENUKI site, just google the name of the place with the word GENUKI before it.

Thanks dotty. I wrote to the council concerned and received a reply which told me only part of what I wanted to know.
When you say *will be bound and available in the local reference library,* do you mean the library in that particular town and would I have to make an appointment?
yes in that particular town, they will be in the reference library but shgould be on the open shelves, depending on their condition. the CRO may have a copy too, (county record office) check on GENUKI. the directories were basically a commercial publication similar to thompsons or yellow pages, they started in the early 1800s to be published in small towns to generate business.

Hi misspell
What about trying the local records office to see if there are any electoral rolls for the 1920s?
