I'd probably cut a couple of slits in the top.

It's not necessary...but of course it can also depend on whether or not you are baking or deep frying your calzone.

I used to have them in NY all the time....and TBPH-I'm sure most were baked,and did not have slits cut in them.

Maybe, but I'd probably overfill them, thus needing some room for 'expansion' :-))
