I made a curry last night and the recipe stated to use 2 spoonfuls of curry powder. The only curry powder I had was medium curry powder so i used that.

However although it was nice the curry was too hot! Next time should i cut down the amount of curry powder used, or use the same amount but a mild powder?

Just cut down. You can always taste the curry when it's nearly ready, and add a bit more curry powder to it if it's not hot enough.
chazza you could have cooled it with a spoon or two of yogurt, or some sultanas are nice. Sometimes sweetening it up helps, coconut milk, a bit of sugar or ketchup.
Did the recipe specify the size of spoon?

Thanks but i didnt have any sultanas or yoghurt.

Yes it was a tablespoon which i used. I followed the recipe, it was just too hot for me!
2 tablespoons is way too much! I should stick to teaspoons next time!

But surely it depends how much you are making as to whether 2 tablespoons is too much?

It was a recipe for 6 portions
2 tablespoons is still too much for 6 portions whatever the "heat" of the curry powder.
You know its a good idea to replace curry power by buying cumin, corriander, garam masala and tumeric power. Even better to to buy cumin and corriander seeds, which you burn and then grind into a pulp. Once you have added this spices, use proper chillies (red or green depending on personal taste) and this should give you more control over the spice as well as a better taste.
If you like Indian food, get a decent Indian cook Book, Madhur Jaffery is a good one for a start. Get the spices and start from scratch, If you are not used to spicy food go easy on the chili powder/cayenne pepper. It comes out better than just putting curry powder in even if is a bit of a mess on. Our Friday nights are Curry nights and sometimes I start on Wednesday to get the dish I want.
