Apparently they are "green vegatable soybeans". Any search should come up with a myriad of resulst.
Edamame is the Japanese name for soybeans also known as sweetbeans. These are harvested whilst still in the green stage. In the summer they are eaten cold as a side snack with beer, after they have been boiled and salted.
Edamame are a special tender type of soybeans bred just for eating fresh (or fresh frozen), rather than the white, yellow or black soybeans that get processed/made into hundreds of different products such as soymilk, tofu. In Hawai'i, which is seeped in japanese culture, we boil them in the pods with salt until tender, and then eat them with beer. The cognescenti have a way of opening the pod and popping the edamame into their mouth without getting the fuzzy stuff on the outside of the pod in their teeth. I am still an amateur, but I am dedicated to this mastery. P.S. In Hawai'i snacks are called pupus, and when something is good we call it "Ono", and with edamame we might even say "Ono-liscous"
Eda-mame. In Japanesse, eda means a branch or a twig and mame means beans. It will be cut with its stem when soybeans are still young.
