it's a hard knock life
It's why I've ended up the way I am. Don't get any sympathy or understanding around here though. (unlike people with made up problems)
I used to canoe on the Welsh Harp in west Hendon for my BCU certificate. If any of us capsized or performed a Eskimo Roll the drill pig, Sgt Bill Bailey made us line up for a spoonful of syrup of figs on the landing stage later. If we hadn't caught cholera from ingesting the water from the open sewer we were in we certainly had the trots the next day, :-)
Did he play tunes for you, as well, retro?
As my mother viewed it, there's never anything wrong with a kid that can't be fixed by:
(a) rose hip syrup ;
(b) Milk of Magnesia ;
(c) Junior Disprin ;
(d) calamine lotion ;
(e) Vick's vapour rub ;
(f) TCP ;
(g) Meggezone throat pastilles ; or
(h) honey & lemon.

Cod liver oil in the brown gelatin capsules. To this day I can remember the gagging awful nausea when I thought it would be fun to bite into one. Much nicer was spoonfuls of rosehip syrup.
Loved the Malt Extract and the Raspberry Vinegar and Olive Oil for sore throats and Gripe Water for sore tums.
Cod liver oil followed swiftly by a large sip of orange juice !
Cod liver oil - yuck

kaolin and morph ?
I may have exaggerated slightly.
I actually got a Beano, a Dandy, a big bag of sweets and a big bottle of Lucozade with magic paper. And lashings of love and affection.
Question Author
would that be the magic paper that made the world change colour spice ?
Indian Brandy from the corner shop - no idea what that was!
Sure was, johnny. Hours of fun.
Lucozade, mainly, and lots of love & attention from my Mum.
Dandy and Beano - Mum taught us to read with them. Korky the cat, Biffo the bear, memories.
Liquid paraffin, Vicks Vapour rub and for indigestion a spoonful of brandy with sugar.
Hot water bottle for earache and tummy ache.
