Hi. Please can anyone tell me what the round thing that's placed on a gas ring (possibly an electric too), is called? It's used to lower the heat. My new(ish) cooker doesn't simmer very low and even on the smallest light on the lowest setting, it's impossible to simmer a stew for example, for half an hour, without burning the bottom. My friend has had one for years which she uses frequently, but maybe like most good things, production has come to an end. If I knew what they were called, I'd at least be able to look them up! Thank you.

Simmer ring or heat diffuser are what you should be looking for.
Simmering Ring. I have one myself and would not be without it.
