I heard on a TV programme today that eggs were scarce during the summer months of WW2 because ' chickens only lay eggs in the summer.'

Is this true of chickens in their natural state ?

If so, then how does that equate with organic/ free range chickens, who, I assume, receive no artificial aid from humans.

Ooops, I meant during the winter months !
Surely if they only lay in the summer they're not scarce in the summer?
Oops!
They don't lay eggs in cold weather.
It's the daylight hours that affects their laying cycle.
If you want your hens to lay eggs all year round, you'll need to use artificial light.
