You might think I'm a bit daft asking this but you know when you buy a big pack of smoked salmon and you open it, you seem to have a whole piece of smoked salmon in the packet. How do you separate out each little sliver of salmon? I can never see the joins and end up with thick and thin pieces. There must be a technique to it, which I have never been taught.

When I've have bought such things I find I can usuallly find the edge and peel a piece off at a time. Admittedly sometimes one bit sticks to the next so you just need to be careful. Maybe you need to let it defrost a bit, or something.

Thanks, excel but I am talking about the ready sliced stuff. I can't see the 'slices'
oh sorry
i mis-read the question

It's my fault, excel. I haven't explained myself properly. I've had a very busy day!
Thank you, Old Geezer. So you just use your fingers to peel each slice away?
It's finding the slices I find difficult.
most ready sliced stuff has sheets of plastic seperating it look for the slices of square clear plastic and that should help.
There's generally some plastic squares between the slices Tilly.
As friedgreentomato has already told you. :)

F.G.T, Do they put a piece of plastic between each slice? I can't remember. It's so long since I bought any as the last time I did buy some, I ended up cutting it into chunks. I'll get some and give it a go, as I love smoked salmon.

.............and thanks to douglas, as well.
Try turning it over and then separating the slices. I find this makes it a lot easier to see the plastic type sheets.
Question Author
That seems like a good idea, annemollie. I'll give it a go.
as anneomilie say's turn it over and you should see the sheets easier
Question Author
Good lateral thinking there!
Some have plastic slices but not all. In answer to your question, yes I just use my fingers, but a knife or spatula would probably work as well.
Depending on the size of packet you buy, you might find it easier to separate the slices if you open at the tail end.
