Neaps?
No, the neep is the swede (just to be confusing).

Hi, is that not an abbreviation for turnips?
Tur(neap) surely?

*I,m glad I'm English and have turnips and swedes
In the North of England Swedes are also routinely called turnips but there is no other word for 'real' turnips. When i was young one only ever saw Swedes, not small, white turnips.
LOL, there's a very confusing but funny article here on much the same question, it suggests that the white things the English call turnips, are called "new turnips" in Scotland. http://www.guardian.c...neeps-swede-or-turnip
Look !

I had all this the day before yesterday................
Mrs jth says that the small white 'English' variety are called 'swede' but I think she was just being awkward (she generally is)!

I'm originally from the Northwesgt and we always had swedes and turnips
nnoooooooooo jack, completely the other way round! Show her my link!
Every chuffin' Burns Night we have this.

Her 'turnip' is my Swede.............and she claims its the other way round.

Why couldn't Hadrian have built that wall a little higher..............? ;o)
i always thought big round orange things = swedes, smalll white things = turnips

i'm with JTH
Swede or rutabaga is a cross between the turnip and a type of fleshy kale
the turnip is a turnip

the scots are wrong.....sorry all the Macfolks
b0llocks
I thought Turnips were at the bottom of trouser legs, I wouldn't like to eat them !!.
A Neap is a neap, a turnip is a turnip and a swede is a swede. :D

I buy the yellow decent sized things not the little kiddy on white brutes. Is there a difference is flavour btw ?
Another major difference that is seen between the Turnips and Rutabagas is that they come with different chromosomes. While Turnips come with 20 chromosomes, the Rutabagas have 38 chromosomes (20 chromosomes from Turnips and 18 from cabbage).
does that help.....

She knows what she knows, does Mrs jth...........I can see her being persuaded by mere science.

Still, I don't have to bother about it, really, for another 363 days.........
bit like my late grandfather....could never get it into his head that Lilac was Syringa always called the philadelphus Syringa even when I showed him in books he said they were wrong
A swede is a turnip, it's just a particular variety that were originally imported from Sweden and called a Swedish turnip.
