I buy coins for our new babies, the Royal Mint have a nice 2012 presentation set, all ours get those.

As for the relationships - I'll let someone else answer that!
I gave my grandchildren newspapers from the day they were born. Came in lovely decorated cardboard tubes. Hope they'll have fun looking at them when they're all grown up.

I'd just settle for Auntie if I were you - we have great nieces and nephews, they don't differentiate, we're all aunties and uncles to the little people.
