My four year old son is toilet trained well, but he won't let us get rid of his mackintosh sheet; every time I try, he makes a huge fuss, and won't go to sleep until I put it back----once he retrieved it ffrom the bin where I had thrown it. My mother suggests I burn it in the garden waste pile for once and for all. Any suggestions, please!!

what's wrong with letting him keep the sheet? Obviously it is some kind of comfort to him. Gradually it will become more tattered and eventually he will not care about it any more

Believe it or not, my sister still uses these on all her beds in the house to protect the mattresses, and her kids are 16 and 19!

Your son probably isn't confident in his ability to wake up if he needs the loo, so let him keep the sheet for a bit longer - it's doing no harm. If you do what your mum suggests and burn it, he may even revert to bed wetting over the stress.
