My sons girlfriend is visiting us, baby is 7 months old, first time we have seen her, they live far away, also social services wouldn't let her travel. Had issues with her looking after the child. To a certain extent I can understand why, home conditions aren't ideal. But I have real concerns now she is here. Baby is also extremely small for her age, she looks about 4 months old and seems to be falling behind in the milestone dept. They haven't been here long but my son, who is chronically ill, is looking dreadful with all the angst and I'm afraid he's going to end up in hospital. I'm really concerned this child is not being looked after properly and is going to end up in care, the social services have already put this proposal to the mother twice. Is there anything i can do to look after this child myself?

you might talk to SS and your son and GF about moving closer to you or moving in with you?
You can apply to be a foster parent, or even take over parental responsibilty via Courts as a last resort. Unless gf is willing to do it voluntarily, even temporary. I know two women who are bringing up their grandchildren from babies.
As SS are already involved, you will almost certainly have to see them about it, I suggest you do so WITH A SOLICITOR.
