That's only 55 years ago!

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for £10.00.

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before £1.000 will only buy a used one.

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. 10 shillings a pack is ridiculous...

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 6d just to post a letter?

'If they put up the minimum wage to 5 shillings, nobody will be able to employanyone to help in the shops.

'When I first started driving, who would have thought petrol would someday cost 10/- a gallon. I suppose we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the pictures any more Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new film has either HELL or DAMN in it.

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it in Texas USA.

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now..

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

Cigarettes would have been a bit cheaper than 10/- a packet then. I think maybe 3/- for ten Senior Service. Less for Woodbine or Park Drive.
Those Americans talk of going to the moon...what planet are they on ?
Just a minor point, it's 2011 now not 2010.

Well evidently 20-20 the thing was composed last year, why be so picky?

AND sandy, I presume whoever composed it isn't as old as you and was a couple of bob out, but nevertheless it makes for amusing reading as was intended/
I never realised the "Correction Police" would have nothing else to do but pick holes.

I don't remember much about 1955, i was only born in the October.
I remember my then OH saying (probably in the early 80s?) "if cigarettes go up to £1 a packet, I'll stop smoking".... yeah, right.

It's 40 years this year since decimalisation, I remember it well, 15 February 1971 - I know it's all relative, but we now pay nearly nine shillings to post that letter!
I was only paying 1/10 for 10 Woodbines in 1964.
You missed most of it then , Dotty.
In 1955 10/- would have got you two drinks, a pint and a babycham, two of the best seats at the variety show, two fish suppers after, and the taxi fare home.
Happy days. :-)
Do I remember 1955? Of course I do, if I went back in time like in Back to the Future? Otherwise no, as was born 2 decades later than that.
Nobody took taxis in 1955 unless it was a dire emergency........so you'd have had your bus fare home plus a bit left over for the collection plate on Sunday
I was there.
1964 you could get 20 cigarettes 3/8d
^^ and rationing ended the year before, in 1954. I still have my ration book.
You're right, LadyA. The memory must be playing tricks on me. You'd get the last tram at eleven.
-- answer removed --
Remember the 50's well and the last tram. Would catch the tram home on a Saturday night after a night out at the dance hall.Sometimes a boy would accompany me home.
Just as we approached my house the door would open , there would be my Father.
He would thank the boy for bringing me home , and wish him goodnight.
Oh dear the 50's ----years of missed opportunity !!!!!!

My dad locked my sister out once in the early 1960s when she got in after midnight (she was 28 at the time) - a bit of misguided logic really, she could have driven away with her chap, but instead he got up and let her in!

Nice one boxtops, made me smile, Dear ol' dad. :o}
