They're unsexable. The only usual way of telling is that the males sing differently to a female. As a result, they are usually bred on a colony basis or through paired birds in a cage
Sexing canaries is very easy to do when the young birds are still in the nest, when their first feathers come in and their wings still look like straws. Just tap the nest with your finger and the female birds will just stay there looking at you, while the male birds will all put their heads down and stick their behinds up in the air. This is 100 % foolproof. Every bird that put his head down is a male."
Females always want to know whats going on around them..!
Seriously? That's really cute! I love birds, always have!
Dispite all the so-called experts who have written rubbish all over the internet, there is no way to sex canaries for sure at this time of the year.

Soon the males which are in breeding condition can sometimes (and only sometimes) be sexed by viewing the cloaca which looks like a swollen pimple.
If you have an good eye for tints, some cocks have a slightly deeper colour yellow, orange or green but you have to see them side by side to notice the difference. White ones are of course unsexable by colour.
The only sure way to sex them is by the cock's singing. Some hens, especially when kept separate, will try to 'sing' but never anywhere near as good as a boy.
