I'm probably in the wrong section. I'm trying to answer a quiz question and couldn't find a slot that fitted exactly!

I'm trying to find out how much sixpence in 1900 would be worth today, approximately.

Thanks!

Well sixpence in the 1970s was worth 2 1/2 pence So i assume its worth the same. When decimalisation came in you could still spend them at first as far as i remember.
Ethel, I was talking about a similar thing with someone the other night and I mentioned the mars bar index (there used to be a big mac one but they made them ridiculously cheap now so it doesnt work)and she though I was making it up. Do you know what it's actual name is?
It is the Mars Bar standard, which compares how many Mars bars were needed over the years to buy the same item.

A good (but old) article here:

Thanks Ethel..... I googled Mars BAr index and was made to look like I was making things up.....again.
The Big Mac Index is for international currency exchange comparisons! It started as a bit of a joke at The Economist magazine but they soon realised it did give a comparison worth having, a kind of cost of living indicator, now that the Big Mac is sold worldwide.

2.5 pence
Well 'A' sixpence from 1900 would be mainly silver and worth more than its face value as scrap metal and, if in good condition, as a collector's item. No idea what, sorry.

As to the index did Mars bars and Big Macs exist in 1900?

Thanks for some very different answers and for going off on a tangent. You can never have too many tangents in Life:they make it interesting!
I long ago gave up googling anything - it is no longer a search engine - its now a money making concern. Doing a dogpile search for the mars index will bring up this table if its any use:
