I will be going on a first date soon and I'm really nervous as 1) I haven't been on a date for over 20 years, 2) I'm really quite a shy, quiet introvert. I don't find myself very interesting and have little confidence (due to a past very violent relationship).

I don't want to come across as a needy shrinking violet as I'm not like this when I get to know someone. I just want the first and hopefully not last date to go well.

Does anyone have any tips or know any useful web sites or should I just buy a dog.

I hate those awkward silences

Pussy, someone's thought enough of you to ask you out - take confidence from that. Don't try to be something you're not - if you can't think of something to say about yourself, then ask him questions about himself.

Where are you going? - that might help to know, if it's for a meal you can talk about what food or wine you both like, etc.
Dogs are very loyal!!
I went on one last week, pussyfoot.

Dress up apropos for where you are going - be yourself and just remember the first rule of sales "God gave you two ears and a mouth; use them in that proportion."

And enjoy yourself.............
I bet you will be fine once you get there!! Its the thought thats the worst.....

Like boxy says think of a few questions to chuck into any silences....

You could always say that you felt a bit nervous! Chances are that your date will be too..can have a laugh about it...and by the end you will be wondering why you even felt like that ;0>

ooh keep us posted will you xxxx

Thanks box tops, probably going for a quiet drink somewhere, but I do get so incredibly tongue tied as well.
If you do just laugh about it hehe.....

You sound like a lovely person pussyfoot....xx
have a great time - shame you weren't nearer Cornwall or I could give you a practice run........now doesn't that sound cheesy!

Thank you all.

DTcross - you don't know if I live in Cornwall, bet you're scared now!
just admit early on that you havent been on many dates since year dot ,which will lead on to stuff you can compare then and now
fashion,cars,food etc
which will lead on to comparing the place you have your "date"and how things have changed in the area
you will naturally branch off from there and chat about other stuff
enjoy yourself and good luck
Is this a blind date?
be honest tell the other that you have not done this for a bit...chances are the same will apply ..and.....ENJOY .....
I had a friend in similar circumstances.
Not only was she nervous about the date, she was dreading it in case kissed her. Whenever she thought about it she did an involuntary "gurn" with her mouth. She never got a kiss...or another date with him
Awww, dontcha just love Mrs O? Guaranteed to cheer you right up, LOL!!!
I was the same on my last first date ...i very nearly cried off because of nerves but i didn't. I picked the cinema as it takes the pressure off having to do too much small talk at the start and you can start to feel comfortable with each other and chat easier after the film with something to talk about if you're struggling.
It worked and was the start of a long term relationship. :O)
I hope you go pussyfoot.
I agree, i think the cinema is a great idea for the reasons mentioned above, always something to talk about after and there's no pressure during. Also you can get a "feel" or him as he sits next to you...keep us posted.
