I am so tired of office work, I really want to start my own business but I just can't think of anything. Being a mature woman it can't be anything too physical, I am creative and artistic but I would do anything if it meant getting free from the daily grind. Anyone out there done anything successful (don't worry I wouldn't be in competition as I am in USA at the moment)

To run a succesful business you have to have a passion for something (this can be as basic as the desire to make lots of money) but that passion has to be there. As you are unable to think of anything i would suggest that you have a little 'grass-is-greener' situation going on and you are just fantasising about running your own business.

I wonder if getting some career counselling might help you? There are a number of agencies who can hel with this....http://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/career .html for example.

It may help you to clarify where you talents lie. As RoaldoM said, running your own business is a serious commitment and does need tremendous drive, so perhaps some guidance as to where you could work and be happy might be a good alternative, if a topic for your own business does not come to mind. Franchising is another way to go, but again needs careful preparation and advice.

a warning
if you want to get away from the daily grind, then its not for you
as running your own busines requires 24/7/365 no weekends off no holidays till you are big enough to take on a mixture of part and full time staff, to be able to cover you.
On top of all that you have to be able to come up a good idea or buy an existing business, which requires loads of money up front and a loan, the storys of people who started with nothing are very few and far between.
Now on top of all that add the constant worry of money and paying off that bank loan, and your morgage and the fact you might not be able to pay yourself a decent wage for months or years add the really long hours, the first in and last to leave.
a high 50 percent of new business fold in their first year and 25 percent in their second year.
Now add all the complacations of tax
now do you really want to set up your own business or a part time hobby you can make money out of.
I know what i have just written my sound like doom and gloom, but jump with your eyes open, I did'nt TWICE ,cost me a small fortune
and if you still want to run your own business then i wish you the very best
good luck
