I think so, cupid. I lose half a stone then it sneaks back on again. I am sure part of it is to do with metabolism as you get older.

Three weeks ago I started walking, every morning for 30-40 minutes. I have not lost any discernable weight but my waist has reduced by one inch and my hips by half an inch. I eat and drink whatever I like but then again I don't like cake and biscuits. Why don't you both go for a brisk walk each day and see if that helps.

"The question I want to ask is do you ladies and gents over 50 find it more difficult to shift the pounds".
Nope.
In winter I put on weight. In spring I start walking - 20 minutes a day is all. I can lose 6 pounds in a fortnight without dieting, or any particular effort. Exercise (IMHO) is always better than dieting (unless you eat like a pig, of course).

Men seem to lose it easier than women. And yes it does get harder as you get older especially if you find it difficult to exercise.

I went on my own diet and lost 4 stone. Never consulted anyone. I'm 64 this year. I had no problem keeping to my own schedule. It was brilliant going to buy smaller sizes. I went from 42 waist to 36 in 18 months. I'm still 36 waist and holding at that.

I actually thought about writing my own diet book called "The diet for dads - and everyone else". Yes, I'm a male and had no problems.

10ClarionSt - Did you cut back on fat or carbs or both?
|
|
Maidup, I never even thought about those. I just changed my diet. e.g. I used to eat chips with all my meals. I cut them out completely and ate lots of veg instead. I used to have 3 sugars in my drinks. I cut that out too. Occasionally, I would have Heinz Big Soup instead of a meal and have one slice of bread with it. I stopped eating all the bags of sweets I used to have and had small tubes of sweets instead. Then, NO BUTTER. I am a fit man for my age, play golf and have an active job. Those were the main things I did. It worked for me. Don't go hungry. Change what you eat!

Good for you 10Clarion and congratulations.
I have cut out cakes and biscuits. I have cut down on cheese (always used to eat too much of that) and cut down on bread. I'm eating plenty of fruit and veg and suplementing it with rice, potatoes and wheat cakes. I don't eat sweets or drink alcohol so I'm OK there, but I do need to get more active.

I used to walk to the shops as well instead of driving. I think that helped. I don't drink alcohol either. I also bought some 2.5k bar bells and just swung them around at home for 10 to 15 mins a time. Sore arms at first, but it was all part of it. Exercise does help. Whichever way suits you. Think about what you could do and go for it. But don't do anything that hurts!

As I've posted elsewhere-I eat low carb now. I started in Feb of last year, and lost 22lbs by May. I've maintained since then...and I eat plenty. I am 65 later this year...and found it the easiest way to lose. I eat good, healthy food-including butter...no processed carbs.
I only walk the dog-no other painful exercise.

Question Author
Thanks for all your answers.we've already cut out chips, take-aways and cakes.
I admit to liking the odd biscuit with my cup of tea.We both keep intending to
do more walks, but the weather has been so cold recently. I know we both
need more will-power which we are lacking a bit at the moment. It's much
harder to lose weight than put it on. Might try swimming later with a friend.
mr. cupid is not a fan of swimming.

Cupid, I tried swimming but found it very boring especially as I could only go in the reserved slot for senior citizens. It was like a morgue! But I also found it was hurting my neck, so I didn't go again. Like I said, if it hurts, STOP!

I found the Rosemary Conley diet far too limiting, I always felt hungry.. In my opinion Slimming World is more satisfying and still healthy. Exercise is key to raising your metabolic rate - are you up to doing Zumba? - it's good fun and a great calorie burner. Good luck!
