25 March 2007 marked 200 years to the day that a Parliamentary Act was passed to abolish the slave trade in the British colonies. Throughout 2007, in order to mark the Bicentenary, we assisted Mancunians to commemorate it and to raise awareness of the continuing incidence of slavery in the present day.

The Council worked with Greater Manchester Churches Together and others, to share information about commemorative events and educational activities and projects.

For almost twenty years before the 1807 Act, the people of Manchester had been showing their opposition to slavery. Despite the majority of jobs in the city being dependent upon cotton produced by slave labour, in 1788 over ten thousand people, almost one in five of the population, signed a petition against slavery. A second petition in 1792 was signed by twenty thousand people

Is slavery restriced to Prositution? I doubt it.

However, yes I personally think Prostitution should be legalised and tax revenues generated from it.
Legalising prostitution will only spawn 'underground prostitution'.....with all the attendant misery and criminality.
JTH...do you mean if prostitution is legalised it will go underground?
Yes...underground prostitution without a doubt. Do you think brothels will allow clucking heroin addicts desperate for their fix to work on their premises?
I mean that even *if* prostitution is legalised there will still be a flourishing trade in 'street prostitution', etc.

I doubt if many of the 'pimp-masters' would be willing to turn legit and pay tax and NI for their employees........
@ummm, prostitution is underground *anyway*, so legalising it won't 'drive' it any further underground.
It's not very 'underground' in most red light districts.
JTH...yes, that´s what I thought you meant.

You are possibly correct.

If the brothels are well kept, clean, TV, drinks served, daily newspapers available and the price is right, then why would one want to pick up a hooker on the streets?
generally speaking, in the uk, prostitution (the exchange of sexual services for money) is legal providing it is not 'forced', done by the kerbside, keeping a brothel etc - but how could you prove/disprove that? it is the written law that confuses the issue on legalisation.

i think legalised bordello's might improve safety and welfare etc., but that won't solve the problem of the 'underground market prostitution' which is generally where most problems lie and will continue.
Sqad...cheaper.
There are a very many chaps who enjoy 'kerb-crawling'.
The thoughts of attending some sort of aseptic premises where the 'transaction' occurs is not in the least appealing.

<<<<The thoughts of attending some sort of aseptic premises where the 'transaction' occurs is not in the least appealing.<<<

Aseptic?......that is the number 1 consideration as the opposite is "SEPTIC" count me out.
Having a chat, having a drink, warm surroundings, "eyeing up" what is on the menu OR getting a" pro " into the car, driving to a waste piece of land, undoing a tatty blouse exposing a tatty bra (invariably black) turning her over ;-) avoid the gear lever (even in automatics) getting your braces caught in the gear lever........have you got the picture?......not me mate......give me the" aseptic bordello"
Oh, I didn't realise that we were only discussing *your* proclivities, sqad.....
Most men are not like you Sqad :-)

I had to google 'proclivities'.....what a great word :-)
LOL.......".proclivities"....there you go again using big words to fool me.
Definition
proclivity noun /prəˈklɪv.ɪ.ti//-ə.t ̬i/ [C] formal
a tendency to do or like something, especially something against moral laws

It's the moral laws that made me laugh....very apt Sqad :-)
