Ibuprofen

Can anyone please tell me if the ibuprofen liquid capsules are less harsh on your stomach than the tablets or can all forms be equally irritating? It would be short term and as low a dose as possible. It's for inflammation after tooth extraction (several days ago, I've been back to the dentist) & I have occasional flare ups of IBS.

Robinia.....taking Ibuprofen for a short period of time as you intend to do should not cause any problems.

Irritation may affect the stomach or small bowel..........no way of knowing which.

Clearly, you have bouts of IBS, so in your case I would take the liquid capsules.....although there would be no cast iron guarantee of absence of side effects.

hi, dosen't make any difference which version you Take, even the gel or suppositiories. the way that they work is by inhibiting a certain enzyme. When they work, the enzymes that protect your stomach are also inhibited (this is a simplified explanation)

I buy Ibuprofen in Spain, because it comes in 600mg (= 3 Nurofen),

and a box of 40 is 3 Euros.

Over the counter at the Pharmacy, they tell you that you can take 3 tablets, 4 times daily (= 36 Nurofen / day)

So are UK Ibuprofen dosages really that strong?

If I need painkillers, I only ever use these Spanish ones.

Thanks for that bednobs, so it means the liquid will irritate your stomach just the same but faster then! :o)

That's a hefty dose JJ. I daresay gp's prescribe higher doses than 200mg but no doubt lots of people take more than the recommended amount on a regular basis. I suppose ideally all medicines should be adjusted according to body weight, it seems a bit unrealistic that a 12yr old would have the same dose as an adult who could be 3 or 4 times their weight.
I'd be happy if I never needed to swallow another pill in my life!

Robinia - I always take Ibuprofen after food and with a drink of milk - but if I take them for more than a day they do upset my stomach - I also suffer from IBS.

yes Den it's annoying ..codeine doesn't do me a whole lot of favours either!
