Pocket money

What's the going rate for a childs pocket money these days ? A couple of weeks ago I overheard a mother in Woolies . Her boy was looking at a toy and she said something like....no you get it with your �20 pocket money I gave you. Is this usual or not ?

My daughter is 6 and does not get pocket money. In stead she gets rewarded for being good and working hard with treats such as a comic, book, toy, DVD etc. What she gets depends on why shes getting it. This has always worked for us and she has never asked why she doesnt get pocket money. Although Im sure it wont be long before she does! lol

my boys are 13 and 16 i give them about 10 pounds a week ....but i still buy them all things they need and want im to soft me ...my 16 year still gets given lots of money from us he in 6 form now keep telling him to get part time work but he to lazy lol mummys boys

My 7 year old gets �1.50 a week and my 13 year old gets �5 a week. Both have a list of chores they have to do. My 17 year old gets nothing. He has his �30 EMA grant each week and a part ime job and has more disposable income than me and his dad!

Hellyon , my lad used to get CDs and would save up for a particular game. :-)
I think the monthly money is a good start to getting them used to a monthly wage .

Psychick , good idea , I didn't give my son pocket money at that age either , it was around 8 that he started.:-)

Smudge , awww , my mum always made sure we had a good pair of shoes , a set of white teeth , shiny hair , and a smile. The cinema though was a treat very rare , it cost a whole shilling to get in :-)

It used to cost 9d to get into Saturday morning pictures, but if I went to the afternoon matinee with my more 'well off' friend Jean, her Mum usually paid for me to get in, bless her!

BTW, our Granddaughter goes to college & gets EMA money - it stands for Educational Maintenance Allowance.

Hi again smudge , is EMA something recent , although it is about 5 years since my son left . Is it given to encourage them to stay on in education ? :-) xx

Our eldest daughter didn't recieve EMA money, but then again, she left college in 1986!

I would imagine it's a relatively new thing & although it's supposed to help towards some of their costs, I would imagine it's also an incentive for them to stay on. -xx-

I get pocket money, buy my employer calls it a wage or somthing silly like that. It is not much more than the figure you mentioned.
