My fingernails keep breaking and flaking really badly at the moment - could it be a sign of something? I feel ok and don't smoke although I like a glass or two of wine or a whiskey and lemonade at night. I'm in my 50's and reasonably healthy although a little overwieght.

could just be the cold weather affecting them, mine are always worse in the winter
I used to have this problem and it really annoyed me so I took to not trying to grow my nails, I kept them short, about 3-5mm max and just kept trimming them. Now they are great, really strong and my friends ask me if I have had a french manicure!

Also as puzzled said the weather wont help either.
I too am trying to grow mine but they just keep breaking .I am having problems at the moment with not weighing much so I expect that has something to do with it.
Your nail problem could be due to nutrition but may also be a hormone related reason.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I'm not trying to grow my nails and keep them fairly short anyway. Probably nothing to worry about - I'm ok in every other respect.
Hi Janbuck , try some moisturiser for hand and nails. My hands are awfully dry at this time of year and my nails seem to get better when I remember to rub some cream into them.
go to a nail parlour and have silk wraps put on them [ not false nails] until they strenghten, tell the girl what your problem is and ask for advice, its free[ for the advice only].
