One that is about to deposit its eggs.

Could you be a bit more specific? If you are looking for the type/species of fish, there is no right answer as roe is what the eggs are referred to of all fish that lay eggs. You don't happen to have the same questionmaster as norman do you? (see a few Qs down)

sorry for being so un-specific. I've asked a friend and he said the fish is called a 'scout' or something that sounded like trout but not. I'm not sure if he's right or not please could anyone clarify?
The best small common fish I can come up with that has a large amount of roe is 'sprat', although it doesn't sound much like scout.
It could be Smelt. It's the name of several species of small fish, migrating up rivers from the sea to breed in fresh water - and therefore full of roe.

Smelt roe is bright orange in colour, and is used to garnish Sushi - and with the right accent also sounds like Trout ;-)
