Hi,

Does anyone know what is taught in school nurseries? eg Age 3-4 (pre-school). Do they actually do any 'formal' learning or is it just a more structured version of playgroup - with more focus on free play? What kind of stuff will my son be doing when he joins 'proper' nursery in September - just so I can start to prepare him a bit!

Posted this in Parenting too, but any info would be good

It depends what you mean by formal learning. There are structured activities set up every day by qualified teachers. These involve learning pencil skills, sorting skills, fine motor skills etc. They learn to count to 10 and letters of the alphabet. Children are free to write and most will learn to write their names. They have story times, role play, music, dance, pe, attend whole school assemblies and go on trips.

It is a hugely important period for learning social skills and other skills that are vital for school.
