Only a Christian would be asked to swear on a Bible. It would not be considered appropriate for a Jew, a Moslem, or even an atheist.

People can swear an oath, or make a solemn affirmation and there are two issues arising from this. The court has to consider the oath/affirmation binding on the conscience of the witness and the witness himself has to consider the oath/affirmation he is swearing binding upon himself.

No Moslem, or atheist would consider swearing on the Bible binding upon them and wouldn't feel obliged to tell the truth because they have sworn on that particular book.

each religion has its own holy book in uk courts. and people may choose which holy book they 'swear on'

If like me you are not a christian you can make an affermation where you promise to tell the truth
