I’m in the market for a new kindle and am wondering which one to get.
I’m favouring the very basic one although the paperwhite was my first thought until I realised the basic also has a built in light, which is a feature I definitely want.
Does anyone have both, or at least tried both? Is the extra cost worth it for a paperwhite as it seems the only extra feature is that it’s waterproof which is not something I need.
Am I missing something?
Thanks.

Personally prefer to keep things simple. I have a fairly basic Kindle with a backlight, great for reading in bed. Never felt to the need for a waterproof one - aint going to be reading in the bath!

Ha ha, me neither Maggie!
Reading in bed is why I want a backlight this time. My current kindle is one of the very first ones so I bought a clip on light for it, which does the job, just, but it’s getting a bit decrepit now..one of the page turn buttons isn’t reliable..so with a birthday looming decided to treat myself.
I have a Paperwhite. The light can be brightened or dimmed to suit eyes and conditions. I wouldn't have anything else.
I've got an older paperwhite that I got because I wanted to read outdoors.
I've also got a basic Fire tablet which I bought as a backup. It's really too small a screen for regular use. It's 'OK'...nothing to shout about.
I see there are ones with larger screens.
I'd also recommend the paperwhite...I'd certainly buy it again. I bought mine as a birthday treat also. Go for it!
I've got the Paperwhite but much prefer the Kobo

The basic ones light can also be dimmed etc, which is why I was wondering if I was missing something, given the price difference.
Reading books is the only thing I use my current kindle for, and it’s the only device I use for reading, I have 886 books on it, don’t think I’ll ever get round to reading them all but buying them is a compulsion of mine, much like buying shoes used to be :)
The Paperwhite has a far better screen with 300 dots per inch compared to 167 on the basic.
It also has better lighting.

If you found your old Kindle satisfactory then the new basic Kindle will seem to be a big improvement anyway, so save your money

Is the paperwhite easier to read in bright sunlight? I have a Kindle Fire 4, so quite old but I love it for reading in bed, and the bath, the light is easily adjusted, but outdoors in sunlight it's quite difficult.
I have a Fire HD10, it does what I need Vagus.
All ereaders are easy to read outdoors - they are totally different to the Fire tablets and all other tablets.
i dont think they do button ones any more :(
My old voyage is my favourite, with thr press sensor page turns but have a basic and a paperwhite too, and essentially they seem the same
I find the Kindle so easy to use.
actually, only the oasis has page turn buttons now (£259!)
If you just want it for reading no contest the paperwhite all day, doesn't need a light but you can increase the screen brightness and has really long battery life. if you want other functions like internet and apps you need a fire,, in which case just go for as much memory as you can afford. On my fifth kindle, one paperwhite my original which is about nine years old and still brilliant.
I agree with rowan.
