I’m in the market for a new kindle and am wondering which one to get.
I’m favouring the very basic one although the paperwhite was my first thought until I realised the basic also has a built in light, which is a feature I definitely want.
Does anyone have both, or at least tried both? Is the extra cost worth it for a paperwhite as it seems the only extra feature is that it’s waterproof which is not something I need.
Am I missing something?
Thanks.

Reading in bed is why I want a backlight this time. My current kindle is one of the very first ones so I bought a clip on light for it, which does the job, just, but it’s getting a bit decrepit now..one of the page turn buttons isn’t reliable..so with a birthday looming decided to treat myself.

The basic ones light can also be dimmed etc, which is why I was wondering if I was missing something, given the price difference.
Reading books is the only thing I use my current kindle for, and it’s the only device I use for reading, I have 886 books on it, don’t think I’ll ever get round to reading them all but buying them is a compulsion of mine, much like buying shoes used to be :)

If you just want it for reading no contest the paperwhite all day, doesn't need a light but you can increase the screen brightness and has really long battery life. if you want other functions like internet and apps you need a fire,, in which case just go for as much memory as you can afford. On my fifth kindle, one paperwhite my original which is about nine years old and still brilliant.
