Colic, which affects one in ten babies, begins at about two weeks and ends at three or four months. It happens when the baby's intestine spasms and causes hours of inconsolable crying and misery - often for the parents, too! One theory is that it is caused by an immature nervous system. Another is an intolerance to cows milk. But what can you do? Different things work for different babies. Sometimes breast-feeding mothers give up dairy products or citrus fruits. You can try carrying your baby on your shoulder or lying her across your forearm on her stomach. Driving her around in your car can help, as can a dummy or fennel baby drinks
We were told by our parents to wrap a bandage around a baby for the first 6 weeks, this prevents a protruding navel, also place something warm on the babies tummy. Redbush tea is also very good for colic, available at most health shops.
i work in a pharmacy and have always recommended infacol colic drops. i now have a baby and have tried it myself. it's very good and usually settles baby down within minutes. can be used from birth.
