Does anybody know if Hypnotherapists have to be registered with a professional body? I don't want to go to one who will do more harm than good.

I am not in a good place mentally just now and various thing have caused pain attacks. It's all just a mess and I need to do something to help.

I have tried asking if I can stop my Lithium and try another drug. But I was told it wasn't a good idea. He did say more than that but I have forgotten what he said - my GP.

I went to a hypnotherapist many many many years ago as I had a stammer. It certainly worked well. Now... I never shut up !!
Good luck wolf xx
Don't trust any charlatan who does these Las Vegas type stage acts where he/she says a trigger word and makes you do something stupid. A genuine therapist as opposed to an entertainment hypnotist scumbag.
Ozzy has given you a good site. Take his advice and check it out.
Have you asked your GP about hypnotherapy wolf? Many of them have connections with alternative therapists nowadays. As well as choosing a reputable one I think you need someone you can meet and who you connect with before you commit. A few years ago, on recommendation, I had an introductory (free) appointment but I didn't feel quite right with him so I never went back. It would have been very expensive too.
Good luck.
OH who does counselling work says hypnotherapists don't have to be registered, but the better ones tend to be accredited eg like in 1ozzy's link.

If you are in distress, you could also ask for or seek out a number of other therapies as well, such as CBT (widely offered through the NHS) and NLP (neuro-linguistic therapy). Find a list of accredited CBT practitioners here: http://www.babcp.com/Default.aspx

NLP is only loosely regulated, but the 'INLPTA' accreditiation gives some quality control. Occasionally in NLP a practitioner may suggest trance work, but not as a first off.

Thanks to all of you - I will wait until my brain stops whirring around in my skull and give it some thought. I can't think rationally when I am like this.

Wolf, I am seeing a psychologist at the moment who does hypnoises downloads for me. I am having panic attacks and it is helping. I would seek out a therapist in your area who is fully qualified.

Also I have started group therapy from mind. Perhaps contact Mind in your area. xx
Wolf - they don't work - you will be wasting your money. Years ago I went to one to get slim (and I was much thinner too) and it was funny before I went into him I stuffed my face with about 3 or 4 bars of chocolate thinking I was going to become a skinnymalink - not a chance - they're chancers.

To be fair I don't think you can lump them all together as chancers, as you said you went to 'one' who may/may not have been, then there is the possibllity that you were not ready to be helped.
Just be careful!
I trained as one but did not complete the course due to personal issues. I went to one and asked him to take his time. He didn't and eventually had to resign from job due to anxiety. They have to be registered with a 'professional' body but that does not mean they are any good.
Baldric I didnt get hypnotised one bit - but I had my eyes shut as you do - when I opened them - he was away out and it was a tape of him talking.

Still say you can't judge any profession on experience with one person

i think that I will see my GP and ask him for his views on it. One of my psychiatrists (about ten years ago) was going to send me for CBT but then decided that it would probably do me more harm than good.

Foolishly I thought that my diagnosis of Manic Depression in 1997 would be the start of me being able to lead a 'normal' life. the drugs they make us take just seem to make it worse to cope with.

:-/

hope you feel better soon Wolf - these panic thingmajigs are frightening at the time but with time they calm down again. I think most people go up very high and come down very low - depression is awful and the thing is nobody wants to talk about as there is still a stigma to it - imagine after all this time. Jennyjoan.

I think it is good for you to talk on here as much as you can as many people will give you various advice.

Well Baldric it would put me off and I also think the same re acupuncture - sticking these tiny needles - and you're no better off when they come out. However, when needs must one will try anything once.
