Ibuprofen tablets every 4 hours and stay active. Walking helps.
A bolster cushion or even a rolled up hand towel behind the lower back when seated.

A lot of back pain is caused by poor posture or poor seating.

Mine improved a lot after I changed my car. I hadn't realised how the driver's seat was affecting me.
I'm also suffering at the moment ... besides the painkillers I find that a hot water bottle right at the base of the spine helps a lot.
I agree with Hopkirk...bad posture is often a culprit.
My back pain improved enormously when I stopped leaning forward to peer at my desktop and sat back against my back support instead.
Sitting in a quality chair with good lumbar support can give almost instant improvement.
My friend is currently suffering with a really bad back and she's bought a girdle thing with magnets in from a cheapy shop - she says it is a big help.

Depends largely on whats causing the back pain. A muscle spasm is one thing, a torn disk pressing on a nerve something else. Them of course you have major structural defects of the spine. Find out whats wrong.
