I have been getting those for years nothing to worry about but dont know what causes it
Yeah me too, sometimes it's just a little twitch but can be more violent. Usually happens when I'm just nodding off

well let me say depends on certain things

I have sleep apnea which basically means you stop breathing when you sleep. (I'm trying to keep this short) This is a little flap of skin that covers the main breathing tube (this is the thing that makes the snoring noise) when you sleep we all stop breathing at times,  but your brain tells the body somethings wrong and thats when you jump(very basic) and your ok     Apneacs need a machine to help them .

It's called a hypnic jerk,  many people get them (including me),  no-one knows what causes them,  but they are very common and nothing to worry about,  The chances of what you are experiencing being due to Apnea are very small
I agree totally with brassmonkey, but if you are worrled it may be Sleep Apnea (now!) you should consult your GP.
Funnily enough I attended a course on Friday which mentioned this very subject.  The nurse was discussing epilepsy and types of , and said that when we are falling asleep and 'jerk' enough to reawaken ourselves, it is actually an extremely mild form of what epileptics may feel when 'fitting.'  Don't panic, she said, as the majority of humans experience this to some degree and it is nothing to worry about!
Yeah it is quite normal although it is usually brought or made worse by being stressed or through a lack of sleep.
There are 3 stages of sleep - I have heard that if someting startles you between 1 and 2 you get this feeling.I always think I am away to fall out the bed and get a mega fright. You're right tho you do go back to sleep quite easily - I'm usually that glad I am indeed still in the bed - LOL!
