How does manufacturers recall on cars work

Is there a time limit after a recall that you have to present your car for a fault to be fixed ?

That reminds me that I have to get my car sorted due to recall. I keep forgetting. Never convenient. Maybe at the next service.
When my Nissan Almira was recalled last year the nearest main dealer sent a letter through with a suggested appointment to get it fixed with the option of re-scheduling if it was inconvenient, but that's not to say they all work that way. They even included a quick FOC valet after they had done the work!
