Amoxcillan/glandular Fever

I am taking 500mg of Amoxcilan for a supposed throat infection. I suspect I may have glandular fever and insisted on a blood test on Friday which my GP was against saying I was too old for this condition. I have had Glandular Fever when I was around 39yrs old.

Every time I look online about Glandular Fever it says do not take Amoxcilan but from all I can see it may cause a skin rash. Has anybody had this experience ?

I was taking Penicillin AV last week but felt quite ill on it so swapped for Amoxcillan.

Den.

You are a bit "old in the tooth " for Glandular Fever and yes amoxilin MAY cause a skin rash with GF.

I am sure some people have had a rash with this combination...........but you haven't......have you?
isn't glandular fever a virus anyway, so AB's won't help at all? I can't see what you can realistically do except wait for the results of the blood test
amoxycillin.

No Sqad have never had a skin rash with Amoxcillan. My GP was no bloody help, she just said 'it was my call whether I took it or not'.

As I said have had Glandular Fever when 39 so I recognise the symptoms.

black_cat. The blood test for GF takes at least 2 weeks to get result but my throat needs help now.
If you have had glandular fever in the past, you are very unlikely to have a second bout as nearly everyone gets life long immunity after the initial infection.
slaney makes a good point....

Slaney. I have been told this, but when googling GF there was evidence from others that you could get it again.
LOL
It is theoretically possible, but I have only seen recurrent GF twice in 30 years...

Methyl...yes my vilest bout of GF was confirmed with a blood test.

No my GP never did any swab test just looked at my throat and said throat infection. This was last week and I still feel like I have been ran over by a steamroller.

To be honest I have not felt well for some weeks now and it all started with a persistent earache, but there was nothing wrong with my ear. So I think it may have been my glands.

What the heck......my vilest bout........I never typed that. I typed my first bout.
So did you stop taking the first lot of antibiotics and just swapped it for Amoxcycillin? Not sure how that works, you are supposed to finish the course...

If your GP's no help, go and see your pharmacist, see what they suggest for relief, they know about interactions etc.
LOL...boxy...you are amazing.....
If you are taking Amoxil as in actually swallowing it
then you should have the rash already if you have glandular fever.

glandular fever and rash after amoxil is SO common ( > 90%) that some old consultants said they regarded it as diagnostic
PP..exactly....good post.
I know, sqad :-) - I have great faith in pharmacists, especially while it's taking a good fortnight to get a routine GP appointment these days....
sorry it went in before I had finished

all I can do is express amazement along with the usual suspects that you have had GF more than once.

this page from NZ explains how uncommon recurrence is
http://www.bpac.org.nz/BT/2012/October/glandular.aspx

and good luck
Surely amoxicillin contains penicillin? Why the swap?
