I don't know what we're going to do as we have a bad credit score from when we lost the pub so can only rent privately. Few houses round here that are suitable (this one is only just suitable). Don't want to move the kids out if school either.

sherr, I really hope it doesn't come to that for you.
Going it get himself to ring the landlord when he gets in, I can't just send him the bailiff letter and wait for him to contact us. Oh well, suppose it gets me out of cleaning the cooker.
You must seek advice from consumer rights, if he has not been passing rent on for mortgage purposes you may have some redress...contact local trading standards at your council
If so you can apply for a stay of execution (I think that's what it's called) You explain the circumstances to a judge and he'll decide how long is reasonable for you to find somewhere else.
Similar happened to me and I was given 6 months. Taking into consideration that you have 5 children and school to think about you might get longer. xx
