Our 7 year old grandson has had an abscess under one of his back double teeth,
The dentist drilled through the tooth, without any painkiller. and burst the abscess. My daughter said he was having trouble to stop it bleeding. The thing is my poor little grandson was screaming in pain but the dentist turned nasty with him. Last week he had to go back and this time the dentist plugged the hole with an antibiotics paste. And today he drilled it again before filling it. My daughter said he was crying again and was in a lot of pain. This really doesn't sound right to me.? my daughter also said the dentist was puzzled why it was hurting him. Is this normal.?

a dentist who ignores a patient's pain? And a child at that? No, that is not normal.
That sounds too horrific and certainly not normal. From my experience dentists won't touch a tooth with an abscess until oral antibiotics have cleared up the infection.
Sounds a bit like a butcher to me, the child will be put off dentists for life
Please get rid of that dentist - he is a nasty piece of work - I have had my fill of dentists since I was a kid - you may not have seen I think Channel 4 or 5 about 3 weeks ago where ordinary people were posing as dentists. Bloody ridiculous for a little kid to suffer so much. Do not bring him back there - do a bit of research on internet and get feedback from others who have attended certain dentists in your area.
I had a very similar experience as a child and was terrified of dentists well into my late teens and im 22 now and still cry when they bring out the needles, even though i know it isnt painful, thankfully another dentist built up my trust and i can actually cope quite well now, I'd dump the dentist right away and go with someone else or you'll have so much trouble in the long run.
Not being funny but is the dentist he went to foreign? i only ask because when i had an infected root canal treatment the dentist at the time tried to drill into it with anaesthetic, i nearly shot out of the chair and its was because she couldnt give me the proper anaesthetic because she wasnt trained with the ones they used at the practice.
Sorry for going on abit, hopefully your grandson gets better soon and you find a better dentist
poor little mite .complain to the dentist boss .i hate the dentist because we had a butcher as children .
Change dentist urgently and complain to the Practice Manager too. This is not acceptable and needs to be reported.

My dentist gave me an injection before drilling a tooth last week even though it was already dead and had no feeling in it! But the next tooth was a teeny bit sensitive so she gave me a small dose to make it as comfortable as possible. And I'm NHS.
Your poor grandson! I had bad experiences with dentists when I was a child, which put me of them for ages, but now have got a brilliant man who is really careful about making sure I have enough painkillera, and I really don't mind seeing him at all. But I'm sure that your grandson should have had the antibiotics first to let the abscess go down, and I would definitely find another dentist.
If you love anywhere near Portsmouth, I can give you their number.

Sorry I meant to get back to you sooner. Many thanks for everyone replying. I have told my daughter what you have all said. But had to see my own dentist today and asked him. He said that is what they usually do these days with little ones but he did say it shouldnt have hurt him.? Still cannot see how.? There is a nerve in them so to my mind if they drill and hit the nerve it will hurt. Still puzzled.?
I am not a dentist, but J9PUR is.........

If there is an abscess present then local aneasthesia is dangerous as it may spread the infection and perhaps throughout the body (septicaemia), plus the fact that it wouldn't work.
Desktop - I know what a dreadful experience for that happen to you - but I have numerous friends and their dentists did exactly what they did to you. For some reason they need to get the dentures in as quick as they can so they (dentures) can "bed" in your mouth.
Sqad - j has not been knocking about lately - I haven't seen any of his posts for some time.
lilac may have gone out to work.

A good dentist does not put in dentures straight away after extraction. Gums need to settle. Also, a good dentist will not take all teeth out in one fell swoop.

I'd complain big style Lilac, not only about the treatment but the standard of treatment.
Oops Sorry Connemmara! I wasn't paying attention there, the sun must have fried my brain thus afternoon.
Alba it happened to 3 of my friends and perhaps you are right - they shouldn't have done it cos one of them told me had she had the opportunity - she would have jumped off the highest tower block with the pain she suffered.
