I do, although I'm only 33 it bothers me. I'm not up for cosmetic surgery and all that malarky, but its the aches, pains, immobility, feelings of being "left behind" that I don't like the thought of.  Does it bother you guys too? p.s it isn't bothering so much that i don't sleep at night!!!!

you've taken the qusetion right out of my mouth! Yep, i've always worried about it for as long as i can remember, and i'm only 23! i think it's the thought of growing old and wishing that i'd done more with my life and theres things i won't beable to do anymore plus the effects of old age on my health.
im terrified of getting old and im 17 aaaahh
Listen sweetheart - don't even think about it - it happens when it happens and you don't really realise until one day the steps are a bit more difficult to climb but inside you'll always be young.  Get on with living -  leave getting old to us oldies.
Hey even I hate the fact that im getting old and I just turned 18.  Its just human nature so I figured instead of worring just make use of the time given to you (er can you tell I was just watching Lord of the Rings??) lol.
I've noticed my attitudes and physical limits (OK, beer drinking & speedy recovery capability) changing but it's unlikely that I'll wake up tomorrow and be 17 again so I might as well live with it.

Talking of aches and pains, that's currently less to do with ageing and more to do with overdoing exercise!

what happens after you've settled into a career? if you don't have kids or whatever, then what? is there still the day-to-day excitement of doing new things, meeting new people, constantly learning stuff? that's what scares me.

I'm 35 and as Andy Hughes says "it bothers me less, the older I get". I think you just subconsciously adapt mentally. I definitely can't sprint as fast as I could, but somehow,I don't want to. I tend to think that what I now lack is supreme speed and agility, I make up for it stamina and general all round sturdiness. At 20 I was whizzing about all over the place like a blue-bottomed fly, but now I'm old and wise I know all the shortcuts :)
The only thing about getting old that bothers me is losing my mobility as I've always been very active. Not that I have lost any yet and mentally I still feel in my early twenties although 50 is just round the corner.
I don't worry too much about age....I focus on happiness and fullfillment.... if you have these age just doesnt seem to come into the question. Don't worry ..be happy.
Yup, I agree that the worry lessens with age.  Once you hit 30 it just seems to fly.  Although I am still guilty of working out in which school year  people around my age would have been in!  I do hanker for my youth and relive memories in my mind all the time, but I love being 36, with the maturity and experience it brings.  However I still can't hold down an intelligent conversation for more than 2 minutes before I take the ****.

I'm more than double your age, Spammy, so here's my advice...

"Never worry about anything over which you have no control."

That certainly appplies to ageing. I've no doubt that there are cares in your life that you could affect for the better. Concentrate on them.

No. I've seen every age up to 36 and I can't wait to see what the next 64 bring.

the only thing i worry about is ending up in an old peoples home..i would hate that and hope i die before my husband..as he wouldnt put me in one..the cosmetic things of getting old dont bother me..and no i wouldnt have plastic surgery..its not worth the risk or expense..its just vanity and its better to age gracefully..allthough i think older people now dont look as bad as they did when i was young..when i was 10 i remember looking at my parents who were 40 and they looked really old..in dress sense and ways..they would turn the radio off if pop music came on..yet i am in my late 40 s and i listen to all the pop music and watch music channels..i think we have become more with it..
You're programmed that way to make you want to settle down and have kids if you haven't done so by 33.

There is a positive side about getting older spammylou, you can be totally daft about anything and everything and nobody cares a damn..... You realise that life is too short to be fearful of what people think - so you do it anyway!!

When you reach a certain age there is a wonderful 'What the Hell' freedom about it - I just wish I'd discovered it a lot earlier....

He he Cetti has said something along the same lines as I was thinking.  There are a few of us Grumpy Old Gals (you know who you are) on here & we love to have a dig occasionally at things that annoy us but that's because we can, and as Cetti said, not care too much about what anyone thinks!

I act like a big kid some days & in the evening I catch sight of myself in the mirror & think 'Oops, maybe I'd better grow up tomorrow'.  Er, tomorrow never comes.  As for the health issues, you don't have to be an antique for those to happen, so just enjoy yourself now & don't worry.

well said oldies (of which I am one), its better than the alternative.....
NEVER ever worry about there being no new challenges, that's a state of mind thing

Well guys thanks for all that. How helpful this place is. I realise I have plenty of time to worry about lots of things and getting old should not be one of them now I suppose.  But I don't think I'll stop worrying about it completely!!!!!!!!!!  What I do realise is that age is a state of mind, and I agree people now look younger than our previous generation, as allegedly 40 is the new 30.  And I notice my Nan looked the same at eighty as she did at 50.  There's hope for me yet. Thank you all again.xxxx
