my dad is going in for a hip oeration, he has had them before but this time its a complicated job, they need to rebuild the socket of his hip as it has crumbled away, the actual titanium hip he has now they are leaving as its fine. im really worried about him as he is a overweight and last time he reacted badly on the anaesthetic. can anyone ease my mind that there is nothin to worry about?

Try not to worry. To minimise the risk, make sure you or your father talk to the anaesthetist before the op. They should always come by to talk to the patient. Explain the previous problems with the anaesthetic - I have to do this each time I have an op, and it makes them much more aware of potential problems, allows them to use different drugs etc, and I normally end up with extra fluid to help with blood pressure
(which drops a bit low...!).
They do lots of hips, and it is quite common for the socket to need replacing. Although being a bit overwieght is a slight risk, in reality the op is farily fast and safe. Just think how much better he will be after!
Good luck and try not to worry - nothing I can say will put your mind at rest, but if you let nurses and doctors know of potential problems they can help a lot more. Dont sit politely in silence when they come by!

His weight should not prove too much of a problem, I see lots of overweight patients coming for hip operations.  Unless we are talking seriously obese he should be fine.  Given his previous problems with anaesthetic he could ask for a spinal with a little sedation which seems to be the norm these days.  More patients in my hospital have their hips done this way than they do via a general anaesthetic.

The rebuilding of the socket(replacing the acetabular cup) is standard procedure for any THR(Total Hip Replacement) and the whole procedure should last no longer than 90 minutes, give or take a little.

Try not to worry, he should be fine.

Someone who i used to work with was obese and asthmatic and she had an operation fine. She just had to stay in hospital a bit longer cuz she reacts to the anasthetic as well. If you believe in god try praying
