Hi, i grind my teeth badly at night and sometimes wake in the morning with violent headaches and pain in my left ear and i feel quite ill, but would this cause me to feel so tired all day as though ive not had a good nights sleep, im tired as soon as i get up in the morning, this has been going on for years now, if its not the grinding making me feel like this what else could it be, i did think at one time i could have sleep apnea as i wake myself sometimes snoring so loud and thought maybe it could be this i have. Any help appreciated please. Thank you. PS i have had gum shields made, one was a soft guard which made me grind even more, the other one made my teeth very sensitive, what i need is something that would stop my teeth from touching so there is no way i could grind, is there such a thing? Thank you

I am only aware of night guards. My dentist advised me to use one but I never bothered. Maybe you just didn't get the right model for you. Was it fitted by your dentist or did you just order them and hope ?

Hi Geez, no they were both fitted by my dentist. x
If you are grinding at night this is the reason you have headaches and ear pain as your ear is right beside your mandible joint. Teeth grinding or clenching is known as bruxism. A bite splint is what you need but you will have to find someone who will make a mould of your mouth and teeth. A specialist dentist. I have been wearing one for over ten years. It doesnt stop you grinding or clenching but it will protect your teeth from wearing down. If you are stressed you will grind more and some foods can be triggers for grinding, for eg, my own GP told me if he eats cheese he grinds more. Try not to sleep on your back as this makes you grind more. Not sure about you feeling ill but i'll put money on it that its all connected. Get help now. I left it too late and the pain has travelled into my neck and down into my shoulders. Don't delay. I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone.
The teeth grinding is defo causing your headaches, after someone mentioned it to me I also realised I had a bad habit of biting my teeth together, say when I was peeling potatoes or other times when I was standing in one spot. As for the tiredness all the time, I did use to stop breathing in my sleep, only for a nano sec but enough to wake me, well I wouldn't wake but it was enough to disturb my sleep! It turned out that the dangly thing in my throat was way to long! (you know the thing you see that looks like a little tongue hanging down when you look in your throat?) Its worth a mention to your GP :)

Ive been grinding now for nigh on 15 yrs my left side of jaw joint is wareing thin and have been told by the maxilo surgeon that i will eventually need the jaw joint rebuilding, i have terrible tension inm y shoulders and i do have thining of the base of my neck, but dont think that is due to grinding, thats prob ware and tear, would my normal dentist not be able to come up with another idea, but even then i cant wear a shield during the day when i grind can i ? Whats going on lol x
I have this problem and I have visited an orthodontist and had a bite plate made for me which physically stops my teeth from touching so there is no way I can grind my teeth. Its like a retainer brace but with a really built up plastic piece at the front that opens my bite up. Expensive but very effective.
